Interview Gera Knol

Who actually works at Vitec Memorix? We would like to introduce you to our Senior Developer Gera Knol.

1. Senior Developer, tell me! What are you doing?

Of course with far too many. The team I am part of deals with everything related to customers. Migrating data, building websites, setting up collection management software. Basically everything that is done especially for a customer. Because the team does so much directly for customers, I am often used as second-line support. Technical questions from customers often come my way.

2. What do you like most about your job?

Solving puzzles. Because I work in a team that is close to the customer, bugs come in. Most are easily explained and easy to solve. However, sometimes there is a question where it is not immediately clear what is going wrong. I always enjoy finding out why something doesn't work based on the data and the code. Start at a point where it still works. Look for the point where it breaks. And dig deeper into the code to find out exactly where the problem is and how to adjust the code to solve it.

3. What is your background?

I studied ICT at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. That study mainly focused on managing IT projects. A bit of design, computer history, database models and more to create a good end product for a customer. All topics were discussed globally, so that you had superficial knowledge about all parts of an IT project. Writing out a well-thought-out plan so that others can realize this plan is what I am trained for.

When I graduated, I came into further contact with programming. At that moment I discovered that I really enjoy being able to create websites and web applications myself. Almost 20 years later, I still enjoy doing that.
